DECA School-Based Enterprise

School-based enterprises (school stores) are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college.  For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills.  Marketing educators and DECA advisors have used school-based enterprises as a powerful teaching tool for more than four decades.

The School-based Enterprise (SBE) Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellentce and to grow.  The program provides SBEs with standards for model school store operation.  The number and type of of activities a school-based enterprise comples in each of the twelve sections will determine the level of certification awarded.

DECA school-based enterprises are encouraged to participate in the certification program. There are currently 163 certified schools stores nationally.

Certification Levels

School stores may earn certification at three levels:  Bronze, Silver or Gold

Gold-level certified SBEs may remain certified at the Gold level for four additional years by meeting the requirements for Gold re-certification

Bronze and Silver Level SBEs are recognized at the State level

Gold level SBEs will be recognized at the 2012 International Career Development Conferencein Salt Lake City, Utah

The School-based Enterprises Academy is held annually during DECA's ICDC.  The SBE Academy provides an opportunity for Gold Certified and Gold Re-certified chapter members to network and learn from each other.  Each chapter attending the academy will hae the opporunity to deliver a short presentation about thier school-based enterprise's best practices.  Academy attendees will also learn from industry professionals.
