As the 5th largest DECA state association in the world, we empower marketing students to prepare for successful careers in marketing, management, hospitality, and finance. A Timeline of Virginia DECA
1937 – Laying the Groundwork
- 
Louise Bernard initiates business training programs in Waynesboro to educate merchants and consumers.
 - 
This three-month experiment marks the beginning of Distributive Education in Virginia.
 
1938 – First Club Founded
- 
The first Distributive Education Club of America, known as the “Retail Club,” is formed at Jefferson Senior High in Roanoke with 44 members.
 
1942 – A Statewide Vision
- 
13 local clubs unite to form the Distributors' Clubs of Virginia.
 - 
Planning begins for the first State Convention in Richmond.
 
1947 – National Influence
- 
Virginia becomes a charter member of the national DECA association.
 - 
Statewide membership grows to 638 members across 32 schools.
 
1949–1955 – Early National Leaders
- 
Virginia students Leonard Maiden and Roy Horton serve as National DECA Presidents.
 - 
Virginia hosts the 1955 National DECA Conference in Richmond.
 
1957–1967 – Building Infrastructure
- 
Virginia formalizes its district system and advisory boards.
 - 
Key Virginians help shape national DECA policies and competitive event development.
 - 
Lucy Crawford’s curriculum research at Virginia Tech lays the foundation for future DECA competitions.
 
1967–1977 – Expansion and Innovation
- 
James Horan becomes State Supervisor, membership jumps by 3,500 in one year.
 - 
Numerous Virginians support DECA through national staff and board positions.
 
1977–1987 – National Research & Recognition
- 
Membership peaks at 18,337.
 - 
Virginia Tech contributes vital national studies (“Corbin” and “Berns”).
 - 
Virginia DECA leads national training and in-service initiatives.
 - 
A 50-year time capsule is buried in 1980 for DECA’s 30th anniversary.
 
1988–2000 – Scholarships & Growth
- 
James A. Gray, Jr. becomes State Supervisor.
 - 
The Virginia DECA Foundation is established to fund scholarships.
 - 
50th Anniversary celebrated in 1993 in Williamsburg.
 
2002–2009 – Record-Breaking Years
- 
2002: Surpasses 10,000 members.
 - 
2004: Becomes largest DECA state association with 11,000+ members.
 - 
2005: First to break 12,000-member milestone.
 - 
2009: Surpasses 14,000 members and maintains national lead.
 
2010–2024 – Legacy of Leadership
- 
Virginia continues to innovate and lead in chapter development, competitive success, and student leadership.

Maintains national standing as a top-tier association.
 - 
2013: Moves the State Leadership to the Virginia Beach Convention Center
 
2025 – A Historic Year
- 
Virginia DECA ranks as the 5th largest DECA association in the world, with 14,831 members.
 - 
Hosts the largest State Leadership Conference in history with 5,191 attendees and an additional 300 volunteers and judges supporting the event.
